Choosing the perfect St. Louis prom or homecoming photo location seems easy until the midwest weather flips or a local park turns into a crowded zoo. Suddenly, parents are playing stressed-out paparazzi instead of actually enjoying the milestone.
Instead of a generic list of parks, here is a look behind the scenes at how I’ve navigated real-world hurdles with my clients, from beating massive crowds to saving rainy days, and exactly how we pivoted for flawless results.

Scenario 1: Bypassing a Total Downpour
Location: River City Casino & Citygarden
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: When the forecast predicts a total downpour, you don’t have to settle for living room snapshots. For Katie and her large group, we completely bypassed a rainy prom day by utilizing the gorgeous, luxury interiors of River City Casino.
How Expertise Saved the Day: We used the grand lobby's giant flower sculptures, massive doorways, and architectural steps to keep everyone completely dry and looking like royalty, finishing up downtown at Citygarden just as the blue skies broke through.
Scenario 2: Chasing the Shade
The Location: Jefferson Barracks Park
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: This was Kaelyn's very last high school prom, so the photos needed to be perfect. Her group chose Jefferson Barracks for a quiet, stress-free vibe, but we were dealing with bright, harsh mid-day sun.
How Expertise Saved the Day: Instead of letting the kids squint into the sun or placing them with the bright light behind them (which washes out faces), I used the park’s historic architecture to our advantage. I lined the group up where the old buildings cast deep, even shade, and used the large trees to block the harsh light. They got a bright, sunny day feel without any of the squinting or harsh shadows.
Scenario 3: Surviving the Absolute "Zoo"
The Location: Forest Park & Tower Grove Park
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: Paige was part of a massive group that already had their hearts set on the two most popular spots in the city on a gorgeous day: Forest Park and Tower Grove. When we arrived, it was an absolute chaotic mess of people fighting over every inch of grass.
How Expertise Saved the Day: With multiple parents voicing opinions and crowds everywhere, I went completely go-with-the-flow for Paige. I strategically placed smaller groups in the absolute best hidden pockets of light, and for the big group shots, I used advanced post-production editing to completely remove the crowds of strangers from the background. In the final edits, it looked like they had the entire park to themselves.

Scenario 4: The Gloomy Overcast Day
The Location: Jefferson Barracks Park
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: Grace wanted a quiet, close-to-home homecoming session for just her and her close friend, but the weather handed us a super flat, gloomy overcast day. On days like this, casual phone snaps tend to look washed out and grey.
How Expertise Saved the Day: I intentionally positioned them up against the historic stone buildings and tucked them under full tree canopies to completely block the dull grey sky out of the frame. The overcast clouds actually acted as a giant softbox, giving them flawless, even lighting without a single dreary sky in sight.

Scenario 5: The "Ex-Boyfriend" Insurance Policy
The Location: Tower Grove Park
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: Emily’s session was a bit chaotic on a yucky overcast day where the sky was impossible to hide. On top of that, almost every single photo she wanted was with her group of friends or her boyfriend at the time (spoiler alert: they are no longer together).
How Expertise Saved the Day: Knowing how fast high school dynamics can change, I gently coaxed Emily into taking several gorgeous, solo portraits by herself. Right before they had to leave, the sun cracked through the clouds just in time, and I grabbed beautiful single shots of her by the tulips. Now, she has stunning milestone memories to look back on that don't include an ex or old friends.
Scenario 6: Matching Location to Personality
The Location: Laumeier Sculpture Park
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: For Ainsleigh’s group, we had a beautiful sunny day, but we didn't want a generic park backdrop. Ainsleigh has a wonderfully goofy, bubbly, and fun personality, so the location needed to match that high energy.
How Expertise Saved the Day: We headed to Laumeier Sculpture Park and used the massive, unique modern art pieces as our backdrop. It gave her small group something fun and interactive to pose around, creating a gallery that perfectly reflected her personality instead of a stiff, forced portrait session.

Scenario 7: Beating Blinding Mid-Day Sun & Cupcake Cafes
The Location: Forest Park & Jilly’s Cupcakes
The Behind-the-Scenes Hurdle: Katie and her close circle of girlfriends wanted a smooth, fun day at Forest Park, but scheduling meant we had to shoot in the harsh, blinding mid-day sun. To mix things up, they also wanted to stop at a local cupcake shop down the road, meaning I had to instantly switch to tricky indoor restaurant lighting.
How Expertise Saved the Day: Harsh overhead sun causes dark under-eye shadows and squinting. By balancing my camera exposure perfectly in-camera, I ensured their faces were flawlessly illuminated while keeping the bright backgrounds from blowing out. When we went to the cupcake shop, we had to shoot right on the outdoor steps with the sun directly in their eyes, sometimes you can't move the building, so you just have to use pro-posing techniques to make less-than-ideal lighting look intentional and gorgeous.
Pro-Tips for a Flawless Formal Day
The Clear Umbrella Trick: If there is even a 10% chance of rain, grab a pack of clear bubble umbrellas for the group. They are super affordable, block the wind and rain, and actually look incredibly chic and uniform in photos rather than distracting from the outfits.
The Party Bus Timing Buffer: If you are booking group transportation like a party bus or limo, tell the kids the pickup time is 20 to 30 minutes earlier than it actually is. Someone always runs late with hair, makeup, or a forgotten boutonnière, and this buffer keeps the parents from panicking.
Bring a "Prep Kit" Bag: Toss a pack of oil-blotting sheets, some bobby pins, safety pins, and a pair of flip-flops into a bag. Walking across park grass or gravel pathways in four-inch heels is a recipe for a twisted ankle, so having backup flats to walk between photo spots is a lifesaver.
