The Best Time to Take Senior Pictures in St. Louis

Choosing the Perfect Season for Your Style, Schedule, and Personality.

You’re probably wondering: “When should I actually take my senior pictures?” While there is a lot of thought that goes into the timing, the "perfect" date really depends on you. To help alleviate any stress and help you pick the best day for your session, I’ve put together a list of the most important factors to consider.

The Aesthetic of the Season

We all have a favorite season. Whether you love the fresh blooms of spring, the warmth of summer, the vibrant changing leaves of fall, or the unique magic of winter snow, think about the "vibe" you want for your background. Your choice of season sets the entire mood for your portraits.

Your Busy Schedule

Don't let a packed calendar ruin your experience. If you’re involved in sports, theater, or clubs that keep you busy during a particular season, I recommend either picking a different time of year or preparing well in advance. "Preparing in advance" means scheduling your session months out and getting your outfits, hair, and makeup appointments squared away weeks before your date to keep things fun and stress-free.

The Wardrobe Factor

If you have a "dream outfit" in mind, you’ll want to pick a season that matches it. You don’t want to be shivering in a tank top in January or melting in a cozy sweater during a Missouri July. Consider your color palette, too, pastels are perfect for spring, while burnt oranges and mustard yellows are iconic for fall. Your wardrobe should be as unique as you are! Temperature and Weather

Each season has its pros and cons. Spring is beautiful but can be rainy; summer is sunny but hot. Fall offers comfortable days but can be unpredictable, and winter is perfect for those who love the cold, just be prepared to bundle up. I always monitor the forecast to ensure we get the best possible light and weather for your day.

The Magic of "Golden Hour"

I typically schedule my sessions an hour or two before sunset to capture that beautiful, glowing light. Because the sun sets at different times throughout the year, this means summer sessions might start around 6 PM or 7 PM, while fall sessions move up to 4 PM or 5 PM. Keep these times in mind when looking at your school and activity schedule.

Location Availability

Certain spots, like Eckert’s, have specific "bloom" or "harvest" windows. Other locations may change their hours or turn off water features (like waterfalls) during the winter to prevent freezing. If you have your heart set on a specific location, let’s make sure we schedule your session when that spot is at its absolute best.
