The Best Part About Castlewood State Park
The most iconic feature of the park is the Lone Wolf Trail, a steep climb that leads to breathtaking views overlooking the Meramec River. Once at the summit, a flat bluff-top trail offers multiple vantage points and a scenic walk through the woods.
At the conclusion of the trail, a set of steps leads down to a unique stone tunnel passing beneath the train tracks. This spot provides a dramatic shift in scenery, offering a moody, architectural element to an otherwise nature-heavy session. Beyond the tunnel, the terrain flattens out along the riverbank. For those preferring to skip the uphill hike, the river remains accessible from the far end of the park via trails that wind through wide-open fields, perfect for portraits with a sense of freedom and scale.
The trails bordering the Meramec River are surrounded by woods where wildflowers frequently bloom, creating a whimsical, fairytale aesthetic. On the opposite side of the park, a quiet creek and gravel bar offer a different texture than the sandy riverbanks. Large rocks along the water provides opportunities for unique sitting or climbing poses in a serene, secluded setting.
What to Expect Each Season
-
Spring is highlighted by the blooming of wildflowers, particularly bluebells, along the river trails. While the trees are still regaining their leaves, the lighter canopy opens up the views from the bluffs. Note that spring rains can occasionally lead to trail closures near the river due to rising water levels.
-
The park is at its most lush during the summer, with dense foliage providing full, green backgrounds. The river levels are typically lower and more stable during the drier months, making the riverbank trails more reliably accessible.
-
With its massive density of trees, Castlewood is a top-tier choice for autumn portraits. The overlooks provide a vast perspective of the changing oranges and yellows stretching across the river valley, while the interior forest paths offer an immersive experience in warm, glowing colors.
-
Though the trees are barren, winter offers the clearest, most unobstructed views of the Meramec River from the bluffs. The lower trail systems are particularly striking after a snowfall, offering a "lost in a snowy forest" look that feels both quiet and grand.
