The Best Part About August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area

The most iconic feature of the area is its incredible versatility, starting with the dedicated pine tree trail. Walking through this path offers a towering, dense canopy of deep evergreen needles all year round. It provides a rich, textured backdrop that feels wonderfully secluded and makes senior session outfits pop beautifully against the deep greens.

For seniors looking for a dramatic shift in scenery, the area is famous for its historic WWII bunkers that once stored TNT. While you can't go inside them, the exterior of these concrete structures offers a fantastic urban, abandoned aesthetic. Over the years, trees and weeds have grown wildly around them, creating a perfect balance of grit and nature where the historical architecture still stands out beautifully.

Beyond the bunkers, the landscape opens up into a massive network of lakes, winding gravel roads, and sun-drenched open fields that are perfect for capturing a sense of freedom and scale. Trees line the water’s edge, providing beautiful reflections and pockets of shade. For a softer look, there is also a charming small garden located directly across from the main visitor center, offering manicured floral elements to contrast the rugged conservation trails.

What to Expect Each Season

  • The conservation area bursts to life with fresh, vibrant green growth along the trails. The small garden near the main building begins to bloom, and the lakes look crisp and bright, offering a clean, rejuvenating energy for early-season senior sessions.

  • Golden hour during the summer at Busch Wildlife is unmatched. The open fields turn golden-green, the pine tree trail offers a cool, shaded escape from the heat, and the long twilight hours give us plenty of time to chase the perfect light across the gravel roads and lakeshores.

  • This location is an absolute showstopper in autumn. The dense woodlands and tree-lined lakes turn into a brilliant canopy of fiery oranges, deep reds, and rich yellows. The overgrown greenery around the WWII bunkers shifts to beautiful earthy tones, adding an extra layer of moody, rustic texture to your pictures.

  • Winter brings a quiet, minimalist, and cinematic look to the area. With the leaves gone, the stark geometry of the WWII bunkers becomes even more prominent, while the pine tree trail stays deep green all year long, providing a gorgeous splash of color against the frosted fields and frozen lakes.
